The S550 generation Ford Mustang was introduced in late 2014 as 2015, and it was designed as a sport/muscle car for customers all over the world. For the first time in the history of the Mustang, Ford decided to produce the right-hand-drive models at its factory in Dearborn, Michigan and sell them in Asia, Australia, Japan, South Africa and the UK.
However, there were RHD Mustangs before, and in the mid-60s, some two hundred cars were converted and sold here. Then in 2001, Ford contracted the Tickford Vehicle Engineering and converted SN95 Mustangs and offered them for sale in Australia. Unfortunately, due to the high conversion price, only 377 cars were eventually built and sold, withdrawing from the market in 2003.

Right from the start, the 2015 Mustang was welcomed enthusiastically on the Australian market, even though the actual deliveries took place in late 2015. However, since the S550 Mustang was indeed a global car engineered for various markets, the Australian spec model was slightly different from the American version. The American cars had a choice of three engines (2.3-liter turbo, V6 and 5.0-liter V8); however, all export models (including the Australian versions) had two engines, 2.3-liter EcoBoost and 5.0-liter V8.

The 2016 Mustang wasn't changed, and in Australia, Ford again offered two models (EcoBoost and GT) with very few options like paint and graphics package. Furthermore, ten exterior colours were available, and both models (EcoBoost and GT) were available either as coupe or convertible, which was offered only with automatic transmission. Despite the same appearance and equipment, the 2016 Mustang was very popular with Australian buyers.

The big news for 2016 was the start of sales of Shelby GT350, which was introduced in late 2015. This fantastic muscle car was a US-only model with a 5.2-litre, flat-plane V8, which produced 525 hp and offered a six-speed manual. In true Shelby Mustang fashion, the 2016 GT350 had various interior and exterior changes, different suspension, exhaust and wheels, and significantly improved performance. Unfortunately, it was a limited production model and not available in RHD.

2017 marked another successful year for Mustang on the Australian market. Ford was proud to announce that S550 Mustang has been the "Best Selling Sports Car in Australia" for 20 consecutive months. From December 2015 to December 2017, Australians bought more than 15,400 Mustangs cementing their position here and making Australia the biggest RHD market for the Mustang, which is quite an achievement.
The S550 Mustang was not only the customer's favourite car but well-loved by the press and given rave reviews for its performance, quality, equipment and driving dynamics. As all Mustang generations, this one was also extensively modified by the tuning shops, and its base engine, the 2.3-litre turbocharged four, was exceptionally well suited for ECU tuning.
Image via Flickr
However, the 2017 Ford Mustang for the Australian market was essentially unchanged, although Ford gave it a bit more equipment and new colour choice. The biggest news in the interior was the availability of the Sync 3 infotainment system, which entered production in June 2016. At the same time, Competition Orange was dropped from the lineup and replaced by Platinum White.
The Mustang was again offered in two models – EcoBoost and GT, two body styles – coupe and convertible and two transmissions – 6-speed automatic and manual. The power outputs were unchanged, and the convertible models could only be had with automatic. Still, Ford didn't offer any interior options for 2017 Australian spec Mustangs, with no subwoofer or tri-bar DLR lights available.

The 2018 model year was a very important moment for the S550 Mustang generation. Not only that this was the year of the first restyle, but it also introduced several new technology features, an upgraded interior, more powerful engines and finally, more options for the Australian market. Last but not least, 2018 was the start of the Bullitt Mustang being officially offered here, which expanded the range.
The biggest news for 2018 was the looks, and the S550 Mustang was given a significant overhaul with a new fascia, fenders, front bumper, grille, bonnet and rear end. The design was sharper, more aggressive and more modern. Even though the 2015 to 2017 styling was still trendy, Ford decided to improve the looks of the Mustang to keep it fresh and appealing to customers worldwide.
Apart from the exterior, the interior was also significantly improved. The completely new digital instrument cluster replaced the old design, and every Australian-spec Mustang now had a heated steering wheel with new controls layout.

For the 2018 model year, Ford decided to replace the old 6-speed automatic with brand new 10-speed transmission (factory code: 10R80), which was the state of the art unit designed to provide the driver with faster shifts and make better use of the engine power and torque. The new 10-speed resulted in slightly better performance and lower fuel consumption.
Finally, Ford has offered more options for the 2018 Mustang and from this year on, customers could opt for Recaro sport seats, Magnaride Suspension System and 11 exterior colours and graphics package. The standard equipment was upgraded, as well, and from now on, subwoofer and tri-bar DLR lights became part of the mandatory list of options. Interestingly, both the EcoBoost and GT got the active exhaust systems from the factory.

The 2019 model year was very important for Mustang on the Australian market. From the initial two-model lineup, the range grew to four exciting cars. Along with the standard EcoBoost and GT, Ford offered Bullitt Mustang and unique and immensely powerful Mustang R-Spec. This model was specially built for the Australian market and only came as an RHD vehicle adding to excitement and exclusivity. In terms of equipment and exterior details, there were no changes over 2018 Mustangs, and for 2019, Ford added one extra colour option – Orange Fury.

Once again, two body styles (coupe and convertible) but Bullitt and R-Spec were available only as coupes. The factory options were premium paints, racing stripes, Magnaride suspension and Recaro seats. All models received Active Exhaust Systems, Sync 3 infotainment system, 19-inch wheels, subwoofer and quad-tip exhaust.

Even though 2020 wasn't a great year for mankind with a global pandemic affecting all areas of society, Mustang enjoyed steady popularity, and sales continued with three models on the Australian market. There were two small but noticeable improvements to all models – the Sync 3.4 infotainment system (with 8.0-inch display) was standard on all models from the factory, and a new design of shark fin areal on the roof was introduced. The improved design of the areal helped with the aerodynamics since it controlled the airflow over the roof of the vehicle.
Image via Flickr
Otherwise, the 2020 Mustang stayed the same; a new colour was available for standard models – Grabber Lime, which was also part of the R-Spec colour selection. The Bullitt Mustang was discontinued for 2020, not just in Australia but globally. In America, Ford introduced the 2020 Shelby GT500 with a 760 hp, 10-speed automatic as the only option and impressive performance and design package. As expected, this model wasn't available for export, but buyers had their own Mustang R-Spec in Australia with very similar output and technology.

In late 2020, rumours started that the current S550 generation Mustang will be replaced by the end of 2022 as the 2023 model. Ford has already begun the development of the new model, unofficially called the S650, but no release date has been announced. However, it was clear that Mustang's popularity is starting to vain simply since the car has been around for seven years and the customers are asking for the new model. But, despite that, Mustang still remained Australia's favourite sports car with strong sales.
Ford is getting ready for a new generation, and in 2020 Shelby GT350 was discontinued in America. On some markets, EcoBoost Mustangs are no longer sold (Europe) and the only model left is Mustang GT. To fill the void left with the discontinuation of the Shelby GT, Bullitt Mustang and R-Spec, which was sold out, Ford introduced a last, special-edition model for this generation – 2021 Mustang Mach I.
Image via Flickr
The change to the Mustang lineup in Australia for 2021 was the introduction of a remote start system, a standard feature on all automatic-equipped Mustangs. Mechanically and equipment-wise, Australian Mustangs for 2021 remained the same as the previous models. Interestingly, the Ford Bronco colour – Antimatter Blue was added as a premium option for the 2021 model year.
